what engines are compatible for a 2007 scion tc

my uncle has a 07 scion tc 2.4l. they evidently had a recall on that motor and some how my uncle just missed out on it and now needs a new motor so we are trying to figure out if we can put a different motor then its original one. Any information is much appreciated, Thank you
